About Bow Valley Parkway

The Bow Valley Parkway (Highway 1A) is a 50-kilometre scenic route between Banff and Lake Louise that invites slower driving, photography stops and trail access to canyons and meadows. Because it’s quieter than the Trans-Canada Highway, the parkway is a prime route for wildlife viewing—early mornings and evenings are particularly productive for sightings.

The road has several interpretive pullouts and trailheads (including access to Johnston Canyon segments) and is often closed or restricted to vehicles during certain shoulder-season periods—check conditions before travel. The relaxed pace of the parkway makes it ideal for photographers, families and visitors wanting to savor the landscape.
